Rebel Fleet 23 Hosts its 42nd Annual Invitational
By Jim Quiniff, Fleet Captain
Des Plaines Rebel Fleet 23 hosted the 42nd Annual Des Plaines Yacht Club Rebel Invitational July 28-29, 2012. The regatta also served as the District IV Championship. Due to some seaweed problems this year, the race committee of Bill Hanson and Ted Mercede ran races on essentially the south third of the lake. This made for small courses, but the race committee ran 3 lap triangles and figure 8s (a.k.a. Polish-Gold Cup) courses. In typical Lake Opeka fashion, the wind was a bit shifty and up and down (overall in the 5-10 mph range). Most of the summer had been extremely hot in Chicago, but for this particular weekend the weather cooperated very well allowing the race committee to run five races on Saturday.
Radu Mihailescu and Tony Goetter got out of the gate strong, leading the first race from start to finish. Jim Quiniff, with long time Rebel sailor John Baron returning to crew, won the rest of the races on Saturday, putting them solidly in first at the end of the day. The competition for second place was very tight with 3 boats, Wayne and Renee Rathbun, Neil Robb and Joe Stoodley, and Phil and Irene Faulkner all within 2 points of each other at the end of the day. It is also worth noting that those three boats all led races for a significant amount of time on Saturday. John and Judy Washburn were the sixth boat in the fleet, unfortunately late for the start on Saturday.
After Saturday’s racing, a wonderful dinner party was hosted by Peggy and Mark Quiniff. A spectacular time was enjoyed by everyone, in no small part due to there being plenty of wine, beer and Dark and Stormies, not to mention great food. There was much Rebel comradery late into the night.
Everyone expected there to be no wind on Sunday morning and anticipated the inevitable frustration of postponement. There could not possibly be two great days for sailing in a row. As it turned out there was a nice light breeze that allowed Sunday’s races to start right on time. Jim and John sailed well and won both races. Neil and Joe took two seconds, pulling them into that position and Phil and Irene moved up to third. Final results are listed below. Everyone had a really great time at the Des Plaines Regatta, and I highly recommend that you attend next year… yes it is a small goofy lake, but despite that, there can be some really great sailing. If you don’t believe a life long Opeka sailor, just ask Neil who attends nearly every year.
